You can’t cross Macquarie Street without running into a small caps manager raising money so it’s logical the newest strategy in this space comes to us from Melbourne-based Surrey Asset Management.
Surrey will be a long-only Australian smalls portfolio but with scope to invest up in the top 100 when the price is right. The strategy will be limited to institutions and high-net-worth individuals in the first instance, with indicative commitments supporting a $100 million fundraising target. Its launch is around eight weeks away.
Surrey’s Nick Maclean has linked up with Michael Woolhouse who comes in as a partner. Woolhouse used to run CCZ Equities in Melbourne and was also in the top job at Lodge & Partners for 17 years until 2012.
Street Talk readers would recall that Maclean left Cooper Investors in July 2017 where he was an analyst after three and a half years. Prior to that, he was head of emerging companies research at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
